The Board is excited to announce Dr. Malinda O'Leary as the next AWLA Executive Director. Malinda has been active in the organization for many years and has served on the Board in several offices, most recently as our current President.
In her own words, here is a little about her history with the organization:
AWLA (at the time, AAFLT) came into my life as I was just starting out in my career. I was in graduate school (circa 2002) at UAB pursuing my MAEd. in Secondary Spanish Education while teaching ESL at Creekview Elementary in Shelby County. At the encouragement of my teaching methods professor as well as my supervisor in Shelby County, I joined AAFLT and attended my first professional conference. My professor had encouraged the class to join AAFLT so that we could have a community to reach out to as we started out in our careers. My supervisor encouraged me to attend the conference for professional development, naturally. This is noteworthy in my memory because it is two times that I was invited into the fold of my soon-to-be career peers and encouraged to be active in the profession beyond my little island of a classroom. As a newbie just starting out, I felt motivated, connected, inspired and welcomed. As Executive Director of AWLA, I would like to be a part of instilling the same to our members, both current and future.
Malinda brings a wealth of knowledge and vast experience with the association to her new position as Executive Director. Malinda says she is excited to move into this new role with AWLA. The move will take place at the end of the upcoming conference in February.
