Join us for a flexible online PD series in July!

Up to 6 PD hours available - AWLA Members can attend all three or however many they are able. PD Hours will be given to those who attend the Live Session. Session recordings will be posted later accessible to members only.  


Claudia Elliott, host of "Growing With Proficiency The Podcast" and the founder of "Growing With Proficiency The Spanish Teacher Academy," will share her best strategies of the interpretive mode in the World Language Classroom. Claudia is a Spanish teacher originally from Colombia, has taught all levels of Spanish, including AP and IB. Claudia has transformed her teaching practices from a traditional approach to one that is comprehensible, communicative, and community-driven. She was honored as the 2021-2022 FFLA Teacher of the Year and the 2022 SCOLT Teacher of the Year. We look forward to having her join us on July 14th!

Angela Williams, a 7th grade Spanish teacher of primarily novice language learners, will share with us her best practices of the Interpersonal Mode! Angela's classroom practice focuses on proficiency-based teaching and learning outcomes, acquisition driven instruction/comprehensible input, and the use of technology to increase student engagement. Angela has been teaching Spanish in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools district for 16 years, having taught all levels from elementary to high school. In addition to this, Angela also supports and hosts pre-service teachers from local universities and serves as a mentor teacher in the Georgia World Language Peer Mentor Program. We look forward to having Angela with us on July 15th!

Mirna Deakle was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and currently lives in Mobile, Alabama. Since 2014, she has taught Middle School Spanish at UMS-Wright Preparatory School. She has a Masters in Education from the University of South Alabama, along with a Law Degree from the Autonomous University of Yucatan in Mexico. Before teaching, she worked for Mobile County Public Schools as a Migrant Liaison, Parent Manager for ESL, and Immigrant families, where she had the privilege to serve a variety of families from different nationalities and backgrounds. In 2013, she was named one of “Grown-Up Superheroes” by Mobile Bay Magazine. Also, she has taught beginner courses of Spanish at The University of South Alabama as an Adjunct Professor. She is an active member and presenter at AWLA and SCOLT Conferences. She is passionate about bringing the voices of indigenous peoples into the classroom by developing lessons that allow students to become aware of the role of the indigenous people in our society. We look forward to having Mirna share her expertise of the Presentational Mode on July 16th!
